What is a tapered roller bearing?

1. Tapered Roller Bearing Definition

When designing a tapered roller bearing, the three extensions of its inner and outer raceway generatrix and the roller centerline intersect at a point on the bearing centerline. Therefore, the roller achieves pure rolling on the raceway.

Tapered roller bearings are particularly suitable for bearing radial loads, and unidirectional axial loads and their combined loads. Its ability to bear axial loads depends on the contact angle (outer ring raceway angle). The larger the angle, the greater the axial load capacity. Even if used to bear pure radial loads, there will be axial force components, so two sets of bearings are usually used in pairs.


2. Deep Groove Ball Bearing Classification

(1) Single-row tapered roller bearing

Tapered roller bearing

Single-row tapered roller bearings are the most widely used tapered roller bearings. They have one row of rollers, consisting of a tapered inner ring assembly and an outer ring.

The rated dynamic load ratio of single-row tapered roller bearings is 1.5 to 2.5. They can withstand unidirectional axial loads and will generate additional axial forces under radial loads. They are generally used in pairs.

The single-row tapered roller bearing' s cone angle of the outer ring raceway is between 10° and 19°, and it can withstand the combined effects of axial and radial loads at the same time. The larger the cone angle, the greater the ability to withstand axial loads. And bearings with large cone angles have a post-code of B and a cone angle between 25° and 29°, they can withstand larger axial loads.

In addition, single-row tapered roller bearings have a relatively high limit speed, they can limit the axial displacement of the shaft and housing in one direction and can adjust the the clearance size during installation.


(2) Double-row tapered roller bearingsdouble row tapered roller bearing

Double-row tapered roller bearings have two rows of rollers. The outer ring (or inner ring) is an integral whole. The small end faces of the two inner rings (or outer rings) are close to each other, and there is a spacer in the middle.

The double-row tapered roller bearings' rated dynamic load ratio is 2.6~4.3. They can simultaneously withstand large radial loads and bidirectional axial loads and are suitable for heavy loads or high-vibration conditions.

The double-row tapered roller bearings' limit speed is medium, and the axial displacement of the shaft and the housing can be limited within the axial clearance range. The bearings' radial clearance can be adjusted by changing the thickness of the spacer.


(3) Four-row tapered roller bearings

Four-row tapered roller bearings contain four rows of rollers and have a more complex design.

The rated dynamic load ratio of four-row tapered roller bearings is 4.5~7.4. Their performance is basically the same as that of double-row tapered roller bearings, but four-row tapered roller bearings can withstand larger radial loads than double-row tapered roller bearings and have a slightly lower limit speed, mainly used in heavy machinery.

Four-row tapered roller bearings can limit the axial displacement of the shaft and housing within the axial clearance range, and the radial clearance of the bearing also can be adjusted by changing the thickness of the spacer.


(4) Matched tapered roller bearings

Matched tapered roller bearings combine two or more tapered roller bearings in a specific way to achieve better load distribution and improve stiffness. This match can be coaxially mounted or relatively mounted and is usually used to withstand complex load conditions.

There are usually three designs and variations: matched bearings arranged face to face, matched bearings arranged back to back, and matched bearings arranged in series.

Matched tapered roller bearings can effectively disperse the load and reduce contact stress, thereby extending the service life of the machine. They are suitable for working conditions with high loads, vibrations, and large temperature changes.

The shaft and bearing seat gasket of the thrust tapered roller bearing(with a cage), as well as the roller and cage thrust components, can be installed separately. It has the advantages of low friction, high load capacity, and long service lifespan.



3. Tapered Roller Bearing Properties

(1) Tapered Roller Bearing Dimensions

Tapered roller bearings are available in two sizes: Metric series and Imperial series, both of which are widely used.

The basic dimensions of metric series bearings conform to ISO 355; bearings with the prefix F-J conform to ANSI/ABMA Standard 19.1. The dimensions of imperial tapered roller bearings conform to AFBMA Standard 19.

(2) Tapered Roller Bearing Tolerance

The inner ring assembly and outer ring of tapered roller bearings with the same roller and cage code are interchangeable. When the inner ring assembly and outer ring are interchangeable, the total bearing width T cannot exceed the tolerance range.

LNB Bearing's metric tapered roller bearings usually have normal tolerances, and also provide P6X, P6, P5, P4, and P2 tolerance products, all in accordance with GB307.1.

LNB's inch tapered roller bearings usually have normal tolerances, and can also provide CL2, CL3, CL0, CL00 tolerance products as required.


(3) Tapered Roller Bearing Internal clearance and preload

Single-row tapered roller bearings only have internal clearance after installation and can only be determined after adjustment of another bearing positioned in the opposite direction.

The preload of single-row tapered roller bearings is also obtained after installation and depends on the adjustment of the second bearing.



4. Tapered Roller Bearing Advantages & Limitations

(1) Tapered Roller Bearing Advantages

  • Strong adaptability and long service life;

(2) Tapered Roller Bearing Limitations

  • Speed limit: The tapered roller bearing may be inadaptable for high-speed working.

  • High installing requirement: The tapered roller bearing is sensitive to the deviation in problems and needs installation in a very precise alignment.

  • Sensitive: The tapered roller bearing is extremely sensitive to lubrication status and working environment, lack of lubrication can lead to failure.

5. Tapered Roller Bearing Application

Tapered roller bearings are widely applied and they play a role in various fields. Such as the automotive industry, heavy machinery, agricultural equipment, industrial gearboxes, etc.


(1) Single-row tapered roller bearing

Single-row tapered roller bearings are generally used in medium-speed, heavy-load, and durable applications, such as gear systems and transmissions, gear reducers, and agricultural wheels. Machine tool spindles, automotive drive axles, etc. Single-row tapered roller bearings can also be used in groups. Depending on the working conditions, single-row tapered roller bearings can be matched face-to-face, back-to-back, or in series to provide specific advantages.


(2) Double-row tapered roller bearing

Double-row tapered roller bearings have a stronger load-bearing capacity, can withstand heavier radial loads, and axial loads in two directions, and have high rigidity. They are usually used in gearboxes, lifting equipment, mining equipment, construction machinery, rolling mills, and mining machinery.


(3) Four-row tapered roller bearing

Four-row tapered roller bearings have a very strong load-bearing capacity and are suitable for high-load and low-speed occasions. They have a complex design. They are usually used in heavy machines such as large cold and hot rolling mills.
