What is a deep groove ball bearing?

1. Deep Groove Ball Bearing Definition

Deep groove ball bearing is a kind of rolling bearing, which is mainly composed of four basic components: rolling element (ball), inner ring, outer ring, and cage.

Deep groove ball bearing 1

Inner ring:

The inner ring usually fits tightly with the shaft and it is the main component to bear axial load.

Outer ring:

The outer ring is installed in the bearing seat to provide support and guidance.

Rolling element:

The rolling element of deep groove ball bearing is spherical, which can effectively reduce friction and improve working efficiency.

Cage:

The cage is used to maintain the spacing of rolling elements to ensure their balance and stability during bearing rotation.

Generally speaking, the rolling elements, inner and outer rings of deep groove ball bearings are usually made of high chromium steel, of course, there are also other materials such as ceramics, carbon steel, stainless steel, plastic, etc. But the cage's materials normally have more choices, it is usually divided into two types: Metal materials and Non-metal materials, such as brass, carbon steel, aluminum alloy, chrome steel, stainless steel and other metal materials, and Teflon, nylon, PTEF, ceramics, polymer materials, and other non-metallic materials.

Because of its special and simple structure, deep groove ball bearings can withstand both radial loads and certain axial loads. Its core function is to reduce friction through the ball's movement to help mechanical equipment smoothly and efficiently run.

2. Deep Groove Ball Bearing Classification

Deep groove ball bearings can be classified into many types according to their different designs, materials, structural features, and so on. Each bearing type has its own unique design and characteristic and application field.

The following are common classifications of deep groove ball bearings:

(1) Classification By Design Structure

Open TypeDeep groove ball bearings 1

Open type deep groove ball bearings have low friction, no seals or dustproof devices, and allowing free flow of lubricating oil. They are suitable for clean, high-speed operation and regular lubrication environments.

Sealed Type

Sealed type deep groove ball bearings have rubber seals, usually with bearing model post-codes RS (single-sided sealed) and 2RS (double-sided sealed), which can effectively prevent lubricating oil leakage and the external pollutants entering. They are suitable for working environments with high dust and humidity.

Shielded Type

Shielded type deep groove ball bearings have metal cover shield, usually with bearing model post-codes Z (single-sided shield) and ZZ (double-sided shield). The shielded type bearings have less sealing than sealed types, but they can also prevent larger dust particles and impurities from entering the bearing. They are suitable for generally polluted environments.

(2) Classification By Material

Steel Bearing

The most common types of steel bearings include carbon steel bearings, chrome steel bearings, stainless steel bearings, alloy steel bearings, etc., they are suitable for most industrial and life applications.

Ceramic Bearing

According to the amount of ceramic material used, ceramic bearings can be divided into full ceramic bearings and hybrid ceramic bearings. Based on the different ceramic materials, they can be divided into zirconia bearings, silicon nitride bearings, silicon carbide bearings, etc. Ceramic deep groove ball bearings have many strong points, for instance, low density, high-temperature resistance, electrical insulation, higher wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, etc. They are suitable for use in high-temperature, high speed, or corrosive environments.

Plastic Bearings

Plastic deep groove ball bearings are usually made of engineering plastics, which have light weight and have good corrosion resistance. The plastic bearings are usually suitable for applications that are sensitive to weight and have a relatively mild working environment.

(3) Classification By Size

Small Deep Groove ball bearings

Small deep groove ball bearings are generally used in small mechanical equipment, such as small motors, etc.

Medium deep groove ball bearings

Medium deep groove ball bearings, which have good load-bearing capacity and service lifespan. They are widely used in motors, automobiles, and various industrial equipment.

Large deep groove ball bearings

Large deep groove ball bearings can withstand large loads and impacts and are mostly used in heavy machinery, ships, power generation equipment and other fields.

(4) Classification By Precision Grade

Ordinary precision deep groove ball bearings

Ordinary precision means P0 grade, in bearing systems with a rotational precision greater than 10μm. Ordinary precision deep groove ball bearings are suitable for general industrial use and they can meet most equipment' requirements. For example, the ordinary machine tools' speed change mechanisms, feed mechanisms,  automobiles, tractors' speed change mechanisms, and other general machinery.

High-precision deep groove ball bearings

High-precision deep groove ball bearings usually include P6 and P5 grade, in precision machines with a precision of 5-10μm or a higher rotation speed. High-precision bearings are suitable for applications requiring strict tolerances, such as aerospace, precision instruments, etc. For example, ordinary lathes use grade 5 for the front support and grade 6 for the rear support. Ultra-high precision deep groove ball bearings

Ultra-high precision deep groove ball bearings

Ultra-high precision deep groove ball bearings contain P4, and P2 grade, in ultra-precision machinery with a precision of less than 5μm or a very high rotation speed, such as high-precision machine tools, laser equipment, gear systems of precision grinders, scientific research instruments, precision machinery, etc.

(5) Classification By Lubrication Method

Oil-lubricated deep groove ball bearings

This type of deep groove ball bearings uses oil as a lubricant, suitable for high load and high temperature environments.

Grease-lubricated deep groove ball bearings

This type of deep groove ball bearings use grease as a lubricant, suitable for low-speed and medium-speed applications, and they are easy to maintain.

3. Deep Groove Ball Bearings Dimensions

In general, the dimensions of deep groove ball bearings are mainly composed of three main parameters: inner diameter (bore diameter), outer diameter, and width. The measurement values are usually in millimeters (mm) or inches (in), and the two can be converted.

Inner diameter (d):deep groove ball bearing dimension

Inner diameter refers to the inner ring's hole diameter of the bearing, which is usually indicated by d. It usually matches the diameter of the rotating shaft.

Outer diameter (D):

Outer diameter refers to the outer ring's diameter of the bearing, which is indicated by D. It determines the installation space of the bearing.

Width (B):

Width refers to the thickness of the bearing, which is indicated by B. It affects the bearing's load-bearing capacity and stability.

Different deep groove ball bearing models have different sizes (inner diameter, outer diameter, width). When selecting deep groove ball bearings, reasonable size selection is crucial to ensure the normal operation of the equipment and devices.

3. 6300 Series

The 6300 series deep groove ball bearings can balance well in installing space, load capacity, weight, and allowable speed. Therefore, this series of bearings is one of the most frequently used bearings. 6300 series bearings use larger balls besides larger sizes of raceways. These allow the bearing to bear up to a larger load capacity for given diameters of bores. Just like the 6200 series, the 6300 series also finds very wide applications in household appliances, motorcycles, automobiles, food processing, chemical and pharmaceuticals, pumps, water treatment, fans, and many other industrial applications.

6. 61800 Series

The 61800 series deep groove ball bearings are thin-section type bearings. This series of bearings has a thin square cross-section. Their outer diameter is very small and their width is very narrow. Therefore, the 61800 series ultra-thin deep groove ball bearing can be installed in a relatively large shaft and shaft diameter under the condition of limited installation space, and demonstrate prominent lightweight characteristics. The 61800 series bearings are suitable for applications where space is limited and need to carry high speeds, such as electronic appliances, aeronautics, medical appliances, and highly accurate machinery.

7. 61900 Series

The 61900 series deep groove ball bearings are also thin-section bearings, although the bearings of the 61900 series have an identical diameter with the 6000 series, 6200 series, 6300 series, and 6400 series, they are made with thin square cross-sections, making the 61900 series much smaller. As the 61900 series is lightweight and able to support relatively large shafts and shaft diameters in extremely confined space, they are ideal selections in high-performance applications, especially for those situations in which there are requirements for high speed and limited installation space, like aerospace, precision tools, medical devices, etc. Their lightweight characteristic could help reduce the weight of the whole machinery and improve energy efficiency and performance.
